Girls don’t lack potential. They lack access.

Girls don’t lack potential. They lack access.

Written by Pamela Jacobsen

We don’t begin by asking what we want to build. We begin by asking what is standing in her way.

………..

A bathroom doesn’t change a girl’s future.

Neither does a home.

But when a girl has a safe place to sleep, privacy to care for herself, food on the table, and a family who no longer has to choose between survival and education, something remarkable happens.

She begins to believe her future is worth investing in.

At Girls Soccer Worldwide, we have learned that poverty is rarely caused by one obstacle. It is the weight of many barriers stacked on top of one another.

A girl may want to stay in school. But if her family cannot afford food…

If medical care is out of reach…

If her home is unsafe…

If she has no private bathroom…

If transportation is impossible…

Then education becomes another impossible choice.

So instead of solving one problem, we ask a different question:

What barriers must be removed so she can succeed?

One of the girls in our Ambassador Program didn’t imagine she could become a leader in her own community.

Not because she lacked intelligence.

Not because she lacked courage.

Because she had been taught, through the circumstances around her, that this was simply the life she was meant to live.

When we first met her, we didn’t begin by asking what she wanted to become. We began by asking what was standing in her way.

For generations, no one in her family had continued their education beyond seventh grade. Her mother never had the opportunity to attend, at any grade level.

The future she saw before her was the same future that had been passed from one generation to the next.

As we got to know her, we saw extraordinary potential hidden beneath extraordinary barriers.

We invited her to apply to become a Girls Soccer Worldwide Ambassador and that invitation has already began to shift her perspective. It is changing who she believed herself to be.

Today, she is becoming the first person in her family to continue her education beyond seventh grade. She no longer sees her future as something that was pre-written for her. She sees it as something she can help write herself.

In her own words, “Im emotional because….

“I can become someone in life.”

But we also know to fully believe in her future, education can’t stand alone. It isn’t enough.

The conditions surrounding her had to change, too. Safe housing, a private bathroom, consistent food, healthcare, and educational support aren’t separate acts of generosity—they become essential pieces of removing the barriers that stand between her and the future she is now believing is possible.

This is the story of what we found—and why a bathroom and a safe home become part of helping one girl rewrite the future she once believed was already written.

When Walter, Co-Founder of Girls Soccer Worldwide, first visited their home, he didn’t see a construction project.

He saw potential.

He saw resilience.

He saw a mom doing everything she could with the limited resources they had as a family.

And he saw a young woman whose future shouldn’t be determined by the condition of the place she called home.

Poverty alone is rarely one obstacle. It’s many obstacles layered on top of one another.

Education

Food.

Healthcare.

Transportation.

Safety.

Housing.

Dignity.

Remove only one barrier, and another often takes its place.

Which is why we don’t believe opportunity begins with only a scholarship.

Opportunity begins when the barriers standing between a girl and her potential are removed.

Sometimes that means paying school fees.

Sometimes it means providing food so a family doesn’t have to send a daughter to work.

Sometimes it means covering transportation or medical care.

Sometimes it means building a bathroom or a home.

Every solution is different because every girl’s pathway is different.

But the goal is always the same:

Create access so she can discover her worth and build a stronger future for herself and the generation that will follow.

We often say we’re building bathrooms and homes.

The truth is, we’re building something much harder to see.

We’re building a possibility where hope has a chance to grow.

Because when a girl has access—to safety, education, health, nourishment, encouragement, self-worth—what once seemed impossible becomes possible.

And that’s how the generational cycles of poverty begin to break.

Remove them together, and something extraordinary becomes possible.

When access changes, everything changes.

Every step you take during Give Fitness a Purpose helps create access.

Access to safety.

Access to education.

Access to health.

Access to dignity.

Access to a future that once seemed impossible.

Because changing a girl’s future rarely begins with one act.

It begins by removing the barriers that have convinced her she never had one.
